New Year’s celebrations carried extra poignancy for the Wernli family this year (2012) after they came close to losing 18-year-old Jessica to meningococcal disease. Neither Jessica nor her mother Andrea recognised the symptoms of the potentially deadly disease when she first became ill in mid-December, and they almost delayed too long in seeking medical help.
The Amanda Young Foundation is a non-profit community organisation dedicated to reducing deaths in WA from meningococcal disease. The Foundation was formed in 1998 following the tragic death of Amanda Young from meningococcal septicaemia at the tender age of 18 years.
